Live Comfortably, eat well and maintain your sanity while your Kitchen is out of Commission
This article is not about how you plan your kitchen renovation or how best to deal with kitchen designers and contractors. It is about living comfortably, eat well and maintain your sanity while your
The kitchen is out of the Commission. Here are five tips to get you through your kitchen remodel project.
1. As much as possible, stop the area being remodeled from the rest of the house. If you can, tape plastic over the kitchen doors to limit the amount of dust and dirt to penetrate the rest of your home and to mitigate construction noise. Also, sealing off the kitchen will help to keep children and pets out of this area where they can get dirty or damage or where they might interfere with workers.
2. If possible, arrange to continue to use your refrigerator in the kitchen remodel project. If your renovated kitchen will have new appliances, maybe you can move your old refrigerator in the garage or basement while the work is happening. If you can not use your old refrigerator, consider purchasing a mini-fridge and a mini freezer.
3. Create a mini kitchen somewhere else in the house so you can do rudimentary cooking, while the kitchen is out of the Commission. Ideally, this position should have a sink or, if not, it should have easy access to water. You can set your mini-kitchen in a laundry room or a finished basement area with a sink or bathroom. Equip it with a coffee maker, a microwave, a blender, a toaster oven, a hotplate and a slow cooker.
4. Plan palatable and nutritious meals while keeping your cooking limitations in mind. Prior to the start of the remodeling project, prepare and freeze casserole that can be thawed and heated in microwave and stock up on microwavable main-course meals. Use your slow cooker to prepare hearty meals for dinner, and if the weather permits it, use your outdoor grill frequently. Stock up on cereal, Bagel, yogurt and fruit for breakfast, and canned soups, sandwiches and raw vegetables for lunch.
